A Soldier’s Tale of Angelina Jolie’s Visit to Iraq
Saturday, July 25th, 2009We all know that Angelina traveled to Iraq, but just hearing that she was there doesn’t really help us to know what an impact she has when she visits soldiers and places like this.
I was fortunate enough to discover the amazing photos that were taken by Edward McNamara - I will let his description, found below, explain who he is. This amazing man is not only sharing some of his beautiful photos of Angelina Jolie with us, but he also took the time to give all of the rest of us an idea as to exactly how powerful Angelina’s visit to Iraq really was.
Yes, I’m an enlisted infantry solidier here. We recently moved from our small outpost in a Baghdad neighborhood, Hurriyah, to the large FOB. The Iraqi Army is now doing all the patrols in the city.
Our job for the past 9 months has been directly related to Angelina’s mission here: assisting the displaced families move back into their homes safely. We have been extremely successful, hundreds of families are now back in their neighborhoods, or as they’re called here, “Mahallas.”
I found out about her visit only a couple hours before it happened. I had to bribe another solider to cover my shift so I could go see her. I love her, all her movies, her work with the UNHCR.
Some of the guys who came with were more cynical, but we all walked away amazed. She is so wonderful, warm, giving and genuine. It is a real. As my father said when I told him, to think that she could be anywhere, doing anything and she came all this way to share her smile and time with us and the Iraqi refugees. Days later, I still feel my mood lifted. What a wonderful diplomat she is; despite my
intentions here, day after day, one wears down and becomes jaded. She lifted that away with a wink.
I am proud of the work we’ve done here and she helped remind me of that.
Edward McNamara
Thank you very much for sharing these amazing photos and for taking the time to write this, Edward, and I also want to thank you for serving in the military. For everything you do for everyone in our country, and in other countries, thank you.
You can see more of Edward’s amazing photos below (check out that profile - simply stunning!) and you can also head to Edward McNamara’s website to see other absolutely stunning photographs which journal his experiences in Iraq.
And if you would like to leave him a message here, please put it in the comments and I will make sure that he receives them.

Oh sweet George. Okay, I may be one of the few people in the world who doesn’t think he’s the most attractive man alive (Sorry girls! Brad is definitely hotter), but he has a sense of humor and wit that makes me laugh every time. His eyes light up with mischief and you can see that, inside, he’s got a 12 year old little boy who love to pull pranks.
