Defending Angelina’s Role In ‘A Mighty Heart’
I was browsing around this morning and could not help but be smacked upside the head with the fact that there is a HUGE controversy going around about Angelina Jolie playing the part of Marianne Pearl.
Now, Marianne Pearl is of Cuban descent, so apparently the make-up artists have had to darken Angelina’s skin and have given her a curly “‘fro” wig - they also had to adjust her nose so that she looks more like the real Marianne Pearl.
People are saying that Angelina only got the role because she’s sleeping with the owner of the production company (Plan B), but for once, I have to disagree with all of this.
Angelina Jolie is an ACTRESS. In case you weren’t sure what that means, it means that she is trained (and damn good at) playing the role of other people. Can Angelina play the role of a strong, determined, hurting woman? Absolutely - it’s one of the things she does best! Look at Lara Croft and at Jane Smith, not to mention Gia and countless other characters that she has played that are strong yet suffering.
No, Angelina does not look exactly like Marianne Pearl, but that’s what make-up is for. In case you haven’t noticed, Daniel Futterman does not look exactly like Daniel Pearl either - no chiseled chin, crooked nose, and his eyes are WAY further apart than Daniel Pearl’s. Will that stop him from playing Daniel Pearl well and faithfully? I doubt it!
Baz Bamigboye, a writer for the UK Daily Mail, had some things to say, though, about the Angelina Fans while he was defending the movie…
“I guess it comes down to a director picking the best actor to do the job, and race shouldn’t come into it - and as I said, Mrs. Pearl has no worries about it. Still, I’m intrigued it has become the topic of such heated - and sometimes nasty - debate on the web,” Bamigboye writes. “Team Jolie are indeed a nasty bunch.”
See, here’s where I fully agree with this man. For some reason, out of all the celebrity fans there are, Team Jolie can truly be very mean and nasty…this is something that a lot of celebrity writers have commented on - and for being the fans of a woman who is very much a proponent of “peace on earth”, it’s a bit odd. Do you think Angelina likes that her fans slam anybody who even utters something that sounds like it is just a bit against her? She would probably tell the fans to do the same thing that she does - look the other way.

Mariane is of Afro-Cuban descent, which you failed to indicate - that is the issue. Not with me, but with others. There was a lot of unflattering discussion about this issue when the filming started, it subsided and now is out in full force because of all the publicity for the film. Mariane Pearl is considered a woman of color. There are those to whom this matters a great deal. I can see it being an issue if she is nominated for an Oscar, can’t you?

No, I don’t really see that it would be an issue if she was nominated for an Oscar. It’s not like she is white and was painted fully black for the role. Look at Charlize Theron and the way they changed her for her role in Monster - where she won huge accolaides. Should she have not been considered for the role just because she was 50 lbs too light?
If Angelina had been picked to play a very, very black person, I could understand - but other than a slightly darker skin tone, Marianne has no other features that distinguish her as a different race. Some people of African descent have very wide noses, but Marianne does not.
I really don’t see why this is such a big deal.

This should have been posted when she was cast. There was controvery BACK THEN. Now the film has been premiered with dignity and with rave reviews coming in this morning from Cannes and this is what you post? Why don;t you post what mariane said at the press conference. She said she wanted Angelina to play the role. End of so-called controversy. NEXT—->

This is the actual article.. he doesnt say anything negative about team jolie
Why would team jolie have a problem with the casting? fans of angie are the least prejudiced and fair fans I know. They havent started any nasty comments on the web. WE are proud Angie is playing this role. WITH NO MAKEUP ADDED… BTW.
That last remark about team jolie was added by a web site that is definitely anti Angie.
This kind of thing happens a lot.. lies and half truths..complete fabrications and twisting of facts are a constant with those who for some reason.. feel a need to hate two celebs that dont even know.
Sadly, it doesnt surprise me that you took this statement as gospel.. one would hope someone with a Brad pitt site would do his homework a bit more.
Fans of Angie and Brad will not simply “look away” when cruel things are sad about them and their children.
I will though.. look away from this site from now on.. as it is clearly NOT a site for fans.
