News on Angelina and WANTED Review
Okay, first thing’s first - the press conference (which I’m told was very short) was just to assure everyone that Angelina and the babies are all doing well and that she and the doctor will be staying in the hospital until the birth of the twins…and he wouldn’t reveal the due date. Hey, I’m fine with not knowing the exact date, for as long as they’re inside mommy, they’re getting bigger and healthier. Also, it’s a bit more like Christmas without know the date, isn’t it? You’re never quite sure what you’ll find in the morning when you check your news! You can rest assured, should Angelina Jolie have her babies, you’ll get the news here as soon as it happens!
Now, for the review…
I just got back from seeing Wanted and, I’ve gotta tell you, I definitely have to do a review. I’m going to review the movie and the theater as well, for what would a good movie be without a good theater to see it in? The review is below the cut, as I may accidentally post a few spoilers and I wouldn’t want to ruin anyone’s enjoyment of the film, so before you click, remember that there may be spoilers below!
As I’ve said before, our local theater wasn’t playing Wanted. Why they ignored a Blockbuster, I have no idea, but it was definitely an annoyance for me. We found, however, that in a little theater about 45 minutes away, the Bijou Theater in Morrisville, VT (I’ve always been taught that it was Morrisville, but all the little flags around town said Morristown - now I don’t know what its called!) was playing the film. The hubby spoiled me a bit by taking the afternoon off, arranging for a babysitter, and whisking me away for a few hours so that I could immerse myself in the world of adults.
Outside, the Bijou looks much like an old-time theater would, with the angled marquis and the beautiful brick. The name was lit up in neon, and there were enormous posters all around the building. I jumped up and down like a little girl when I saw the huge Wanted poster with Angie’s beautiful face front and center.
We parked the car and headed in. There were only two attendants there, one girl manning the ticket counter and another manning the candy counter. Both were extremely nice and polite, which always makes my theater experience better. We paid, picked up a soda at the counter, and followed the sign which said to…walk upstairs? That didn’t make any sense, until we climbed the stairs and found that the theater had made the best use of space by making a little theater upstairs!
It was quaint , with just enough space for probably 100 people or so. The room angled down sharply, much like you’d see in an off-broadway theater, so that you never had to worry about looking over someone’s head to see the movie. Not that it mattered much, there were only 4 of us in the theater!
And, I kid you not, the combination of the angle of the theater, with the size of the screen made both my husband and I feel as though we were almost IN the screen! A very nice way to see Angelina Jolie’s naked behind, I can tell you that.
The movie started and, after a zillion commercials (seriously, don’t we get enough commercials on television?), the movie started.
It was definitely a bit confusing at first. One moment you’re seeing someone get assassinated and the next you’re following the bullet back to the person who is doing the assassinating. So right in the very beginning, you know who the villain is, there’s no mystery.
Or so you think.
You have almost no pity for Wesley Gibson when you first see him, for the simple fact that his life is a mess. His girlfriend is cheating on him with his best friend, who is a royal cocky ass, and his boss walks all over him. He’s on anxiety medications and even though he knows that his best friend is sleeping with his girlfriend (who annoyed the piss outta me, by the way), he chooses to always be the “nice guy”, and shut up.
The first scene with Angelina Jolie (which can be seen on this website) is, to say the least, stunning, simply due to the smirk she has on her face the first few seconds she’s talking to our hero, Wesley. Then the action really picks up.
Wesley is dragged along in the adventure, once again, taking orders from somebody – this time, the Fraternity. He chooses to learn how to be an assassin, partly motivated by the 3 million dollars that appeared in his bank account, and partly because he just doesn’t know what else to do. As h says, “I can’t go back.”
The training begins and, let me tell you, its ruthless. If you can’t stomach beatings, cuts, and blood, close your eyes. Actually, if you can’t stomach these things, you should never walk into the theater to see this movie in the first place! Even though it is a bit repetitive, it is never boring, and keeps your eyes glued to the screen (while wincing) the entire time.
The beautiful Fox finally gets through to Wesley and he becomes an assassin. He then learns the secret of the Fraternity – those
who are assassinated are chosen due to the secret binary code hidden in a giant weaving cloth.
There were plenty of twists and turns in the film, and I’ll have to say that often I figured them out before they were revealed, but this didn’t make the movie any less enjoyable. This is one movie when I loved, and hated, the ending, but I was able to walk away satisfied and hungry for more – isn’t that the goal of any movie?
Some reviews say that you have to “suspend reality a bit” – but isn’t that what going to the movies and reading a good story is all about?
Even though I’m a “girl”, I was astounded by the special effects…mostly because I didn’t even realize that most of them were special effects until I really thought about it. Why can’t a car whip around at 65 miles per hour and snatch up someone standing in the street? Why can’t bullets curve? I love Sloan’s line (which I’m probably butchering).
“If someone handed you a gun today and didn’t tell you that bullets always had to fly straight, what would you do?”
All in all? An amazing movie. Do I wish Angelina would’ve talked more in it? Of course, but I liked that her character was quiet as well, and I LOVED the facial expressions she often had. It seemed like a solid performance from all of the actors, and it was filmed beautifully. The only problem? I wanted to see more!
Thank you, Bijou Theater, for an amazing experience, and thank you James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, and all the rest of you (including the director and the behind the scenes crew) for giving me a great few hours of entertainment!
